Atomic diffraction by a thin phase grating

چکیده
We present a semiclassical perturbation method for the description of atomic diffraction by a weakly modulated potential. It proceeds in a way similar to the treatment of light diffraction by a thin phase grating, and consists in calculating the atomic wavefunction by mean~ of action integrals along the classical trajectories of the atoms in the absence of the modulated part of the potential. The capabilitie~ and the validity condition of'the method are illustrated on the well-known case of atomic diffraction by a Gaussian standing wave. We prove that in this situation the perturbation method is equivalent to the Raman-Nath approximation, and we point out that the usually-considered Raman-Nath validity condition can lead to inaccuracies in the evaluation of the phases of the diffraction amplitudes. The method i~ also applied to the case of an evanescent wave reflection grating, and an analytical expression for the diffraction pattern at any incidence angle is obtained for the first time. Finally, the application of the method to other situations is briefly

Atomic-resolution Imaging Using Cs-corrected Vortex Beams
Phase gratings have been shown to produce electron beams with orbital angular momentum as demonstrated by numerous groups, and show promise for electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) at the atomic scale [1, 2]. A linear diffraction grating will produce diffracted beams with a separation determined by the pitch or spacing between grating lines. A grating with a central line that forks into ...
متن کاملUsing Atomic Diffraction of Na from Material Gratings to Measure Atom-Surface Interactions
In atom optics a material structure is commonly regarded as an amplitude mask for atom waves. However, atomic diffraction patterns formed using material gratings indicate that material structures also operate as phase masks. In this study a well collimated beam of sodium atoms is used to illuminate a silicon nitride grating with a period of 100 nm. During passage through the grating slots atoms...
متن کاملElectrically-switchable, polarization-independent diffraction grating based on negative dielectric anisotropy liquid crystal
An atomic force microscope is used to scribe polymer-coated substrates to create an electrically-controlled polarization grating. The grating is nondiffracting in the voltage-off state and diffracting in the voltage-on state. Based upon an optical phase difference of approximately π between adjacent pixels, the grating’s efficiency is independent of optical polarization and can be prepared for ...

The effect of evaporation rate on structural, morphological and optical properties of electron beam evaporated CdS thin films have been investigated. CdS thin film deposited by electron beam evaporation method in 12nm/min and 60nm/min evaporation rates on glass substrates. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy were used to character...
متن کاملHigh-resolution liquid-crystal phase grating formed by fringing fields from interdigitated electrodes.
We report the formation of thin anisotropic phase gratings in a nematic liquid-crystalline film by use of lateral (fringing) electric fields induced by transparent interdigitated electrodes. These gratings yield high diffraction efficiency (>30%) with a strong dependence on the readout beam incidence angle. In addition, the formation of a defect wall is observed that has a significant effect on...
